NOTE: It is possible, even likely, that the data presented in this section constitute an underrepresentation of the actual number of hate crime incidents that have occurred on college campuses in the United States given the 2009 findings of the New York State Comptroller's Office which found that during 2006 and 2007 five City University of New York schools (the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Queens College, Baruch College, Hunter College, and Medgar Evers College) failed to report 78 out of the total 107 serious crimes on their campuses as is required by federal law.
